September 15 – October 21, 2012

Saturday, October 21, the 7th edition of eXplore dance festival – Bucharest International Contemporary Dance and Performance Festival ended after 5 weeks of performances, installations, workshops, lectures, and film screenings. The event ended with the informal presentations of the residencies hosted in the frame of MEET THE NEXT GENERATION, 3rd edition.
For 5 weeks, the over 4000 spectators that took part in the event were able to watch 40 performances and meet the over 150 artists who came to Bucharest.
One of the main events of the festival was the performance of ‘booty Looting’ by Wim Vandekeybus/Ultima Vez, which gathered more than 300 people over the 3 days.
Another highlight of this year’s festival was the Romanian Contemporary Dance and Performance Platform, a project aiming to support and promote the Romanian production and presentation in contemporary dance. 15 Romanian projects (performances and installations) were presented during October 11-14 at WASP, gathering an audience of more than 1500 people. 4Culture coproduced 6 Romanian performances in the frame of the Platform, and 5 of the shows presented in the festival were premieres.
More than ever, the festival acted on multidisciplinarity, presenting, alongside dance performances and film screenings (documentary and shorts), sound walks (Maria Balabas and Dariu Ghiu), interactive and visual installations (Eduard Gabia), sound and light installations (Maria Balabas, Superamas collective), to name a few.
The festival focused equally on education programs; 3 workshops for professionals and non-professionals, one workshop of light design, the Critical Endeavour program for emerging journalists, artist talks, the residency programme Meet the Next Generation, all meant to contribute to the promotion and formation of young Romanian creators in contemporary dance and performance.
The edition was marked by the opening, by 4Culture, of a new space – WASP (Working Art Space and Production), an alternative private house for contemporary dance, visual arts, and contemporary theatre, inside the former factory Flaros in Bucharest. WASP has hosted the last 4 weeks of the festival and will continue to produce and present the projects of contemporary Romanian artists.
